Mulu - Max Koether

Join ASS member Max Koether as he discusses the Winter 2022 UK Expedition to Gunung Mulu National Park in Borneo. 
Over 1 month, 30 cavers moved Clearwater Cave up the rankings from the 9^th longest to the 8^th longest cave in the world, overtaking Lechuguilla in New Mexico. Alongside the exploration, a joint team of scientists from the University of Akron and the British Geological Survey studied potential connections between the caves’ microbiomes, the morphological modification of passages following their initial formation, and the rapid degradation of ropes rigged within the Mulu caves. Max will discuss some of the expedition’s highlights, embarrassing personal failures, initial scientific results, future expedition plans, and his ongoing PhD research.
